ANDROID smartphone owners should watch out for a vicious new piece of malware – dubbed HummingBad – believed to have already infected a staggering 10 million devices worldwide.
HummingBad installs fraudulent apps to generate advertising revenue from unsuspecting users for a Chinese group called YingMob, the report claims.
Estimates suggest the HummingBad malware generates some $300,000 per month in revenue for YingMob.
"The group is highly organised," according to the Check Point report "with 25 employees that staff four separate groups responsible for developing HummingBad’s malicious components."
Like many highly-successful Android malware attacks before it, HummingBad is often installed when a smartphone owner visits a malicious site – often containing pornography.
Android attacks like these have become so prevelant, one renowned online security pundit said Android users should "give up, switch to Apple and buy an iPhone".
