During Awards season, many film festivals rush to reward veteran actors with special honors. It seems that process has begun this year as Annette Bening will be honored by the San Diego Film Festival. Bening is a four time Academy Award nominee, with her most recent nomination in 2011 for “The Kids are All Right.” However, Bening has appeared in more independent and commercial fare as of late. This includes roles in indie darlings “Danny Collins” and “Ruby Sparks.”
Bening’s career achievements are undeniable. She received her first Oscar nomination in 1991 for the dark comedy “The Grifters.” After she burst onto the scene, she quickly followed up her first nomination with “Postcards from the Edge” and “Bugsy.” She also received starring roles in films like “The American President,” and the Best Picture winner “American Beauty.” She received another nomination for the later and established herself as one of the best actresses of her generation.
While Bening has yet to bring home an Oscar, she certainly seems like she has plenty of chances this year. Not only will she be one of the stars of the highly anticipated “20th Century Women” but she also has roles in her husband’s film “No Rules Apply,” as well as the Michael Mayer’s adaption of Chekhov’s “The Seagull.”
The San Diego Film Festival will run from September 28th until October 2nd. They will reward Bening with the Gregory Peck Award for Excellence in Cinema on September 29th. The only other recipient of the the award since its inception in 2014 is Alan Arkin
