Polish man left with "life-changing injury" after Brexit result day attack when asked if he "spoke English"
A Polish man has been left with life-changing injuries after being attacked by two thugs on the day Britain voted to leave the EU.
Police are treating the horrendous incident in Yeovil as racially aggravated assault and a hate crime.
The victim was challenged by two men outside the old Green Dragon pub at around 6pm on June 24 and asked if he "spoke English".
He was then repeatedly punched and kicked, even as he lay helpless on the floor.
The victim needed hospital treatment after suffering a potentially life changing eye injury as well as a fractured cheek bone and bruising to his body.
Avon and Somerset Police said although the incident happened on the day of the Brexit vote, it wasn’t reported until three days later.
PC Jason Sims said: “This is a despicable attack on a man as he walked down the street which appears to be motivated purely by hate.
“We’re taking this incident extremely seriously and are doing everything we can to support the victim who has been left psychologically traumatised as well as physically hurt.
“We’re grateful the attack was reported to us and would always encourage anyone who has been a victim of hate crime to let us know.”
