The German leader revealed her wishes on a visit to Tallinn, Estonia.
She said: “We have to think about what our priorities are, how we want to continue our work and where we want to make an effort in particular.
“This is the purpose in Bratislava.”
Britons voted to leave the EU at a June 23 referendum and the UK been snubbed and is not invited to participate in the meeting of EU leaders on September 16.
While hosting the German leader, Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas said: “European leaders are expected to focus on our real problems.”
Mrs Merkel has insisted the Bratislava gathering would not be a summit for big decisions, but rather allow leaders to set an agenda for the coming months.
The meeting cannot be called a summit because Britain has been excluded from taking part, following its decision to leave the bloc.
There she will be pressured over her migration policy with the nations angry over her drive for a mandatory refugee relocation scheme, being pushed from the EU.
Hungary is due to hold a referendum on the controversial issue on October 2.
Poland's foreign minister Witold Waszczykowski called the German policy "selfish".
Hungarian PM Orban said the task for politicians was to change a decision by the EU to let in migrants and distribute them based on quotas among member states.
He said: ”The question is whether Angela Merkel will be willing to change this flawed Brussels decision together with us.”
“All families occasionally need phases in which they think about where they go from here.”
Mr Orban is also likely to push for a European Union joint army in today's talks.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, he said: ”We should list the issue of security as a priority, and we should start setting up a common European army.”
